The August comScore US smartphone market share report is out. The story is familiar: Apple and Samsung are the top two OEMs, while others are down or flat.

August smartphone share

On the OS side, comScore agrees with earlier Kantar data showing small gains by Windows Phone in the US. But the news here appears to be that Android may have hit a ceiling. This may be in part because, in the US at least, the Galaxy S4 has underperformed.

These data also don’t reflect the release of the iPhone 5s and 5c.

August OS share

The most interesting part of the report are the data on app and mobile web usage.  They show that Facebook remains the top mobile app but that in the aggregate Google sites and apps reach more than 92 percent of the US smartphone population.

In the wake of Twitter’s S-1 it’s interesting to see that Twitter is not a top 10 app or mobile site. That either signals challenges ahead or, if you’re an optimist, suggests that there’s stil lots of room for growth.

Another surprise is AOL’s top 5 status in terms of reach.
