52% Of Sharing Happens On Facebook; Google +1 Has Plateaued, AddThis Says

Addthis Facebook TwitterFifty-two percent of all sharing online happens on Facebook, about four times more than Twitter’s 13.5 percent. And Google +1 sharing “has plateaued.” That’s according to sharing platform AddThis, which shared its 2011 Sharing Trends today.

The numbers are interesting. Facebook, as you’d expect, owns the lion’s share of sharing with 52.1 percent. Twitter represents only 13.5 percent of sharing on the web, but that’s a whopping 577 percent (yes, five hundred seventy-seven) higher than a year ago. Tumblr’s growth was even more dramatic: 1,299.5 percent between 2010 and 2011.

AddThis says Google +1 sharing grew 373 percent during the year, but “has plateaued” now; there’s no data offering clarity on what exactly that means. (Google launched the +1 button in March, and made it available to websites about two months later.)

But the news isn’t all bad for Google. AddThis says Chrome became the number two sharing browser, passing Firefox in November. And it looks poised to pass Internet Explorer soon.

A few other interesting stats from AddThis’ recap:

  • Digg sharing declined by 47.7 percent and MySpace sharing dropped by 56.9 percent.
  • Mobile sharing grew by 600 percent during the year.
  • Sharing on the iPad surpassed iPhone sharing in June. iPad sharing grew 598 percent.
  • 28 percent of all AddThis shares in 2011 were about Osama Bin Laden’s death, making it the most shared event of the year.


AddThis says that it now has sharing buttons/widgets on more than 11 million domains and reaches more than 1.2 billion web users.
