There’s no question that Ellen’s selfie taken during the Oscars and surrounded by celebrities has set a new record on Twitter. But the picture has proven a huge hit on Facebook, too — rivaling Twitter’s figures and perhaps heading toward a Facebook record.
On Twitter, Ellen’s selfie has over 1.5 million retweets at the moment, well past the 887,000 record that was held by Barack Obama’s reelection tweet:
If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars pic.twitter.com/C9U5NOtGap

On Facebook, the picture was also shared on Ellen’s page and has just over 1 million likes, at the time of this story:
You can debate whether a retweet is worth more or less than a like and how much exposure each will generate.
I’d say it was pretty clear Ellen was playing live for the Twitter audience. She even announced mid-show that Twitter told her she’d broken the record.
But the high figure will give Facebook some strong ammunition that live TV plays a big role on its platform, as well — especially for photo to have generated so much attention while the show was still going.
On Facebook, Ellen’s not yet a record-breaker. As BetaTwentyOne noted to us on Twitter, Barack Obama’s reelection post has 4.4 million tweets, so Ellen would have to at least top that.
