The comScore August smartphone market share figures are out. Smartphone penetration remains at just over 77 percent in the US. Sequentially, almost all the numbers are flat.

Google/Android had a 51.7 percent OS share, while Apple/iOS was hovering just above 44 percent, where they were last month. Compared with a year ago, however, Apple’s share is up about two points, and Android is down very slightly from where it was in August 2014.

Almost nothing has shifted among the top 15 smartphone apps, with the notable exception that Snapchat has fallen off the top 15 list. Only a few months ago, Snapchat replaced Google+ on the list.

While most of the same apps remain on the list vs. a year ago, as mentioned, Google+ is gone, and so is Yahoo Weather. Amazon mobile is present, in addition to new arrival Google drive. Below is a comScore chart that offers a look at a longer list of top apps in the US market.

Comscore also recently released data showing that while nearly 90 percent of mobile media time is spent within apps, three top or favorite apps tend to capture 80 percent of that time.
