Google+ IconFollowing a number of new Google+ updates announced at Google I/O, a new Google+ app for Android is rolling out today with more options to organize and edit photos, a new locations section that lets users know where their friends are, and the new automatically-added Google+ hashtags to locate related content within a user’s stream.

Photo Organizing & Editing Options

The new app now includes an Auto Backup feature that stores photos as they are being taken, along with an Auto Highlight feature where users can browse a selection of top shots from added sets of photos, and an Auto Enhance feature that automatically improves images.

A new Auto Awesome feature lets users manipulate images to create new versions of existing photos. The newly updated app also includes Snapseed‘s photo-editing tools, offering users a variety of filters and the ability to control image effects like saturation and contrast within the app.

New Locations Section

By tapping “Locations” from Google+ app menu, the new Locations section lets users see where their friends are via a map. Users have full control over whether their current whereabouts are shared by choosing not to share their location, or limiting who can see their location.

Automatically-Added Hashtags Now In Android App Stream

Since last week’s Google I/O conference, Google+ has started automatically adding hashtags to photos and posts, allowing users to explore related content within their Google+ stream. This feature is now part of the Google+ app for Android, with tags appearing at the top-right of individual posts.

By clicking on the tags, users will see a stream of posts containing related content, as shown with the two images below that include a #GOOGLEIO2013 hashtag. Tags added by users will receive preference over any automatically-added tags. Also, automatically-added hashtags can be removed from a single post or all of them.

According to Google, the appearance and use of notifications has improved as well. Users can also edit profile fields within the app and now have one-tap access to the new Hangouts app.
