Integrate buys CaliberMind and hopes to close the B2B demand gen loop

Is the problem connecting marketing, pipeline, and revenue? Or is it the crazy ways businesses buy, which no technology can fix?

B2B demand gen player Integrate announced Wednesday it was acquiring CaliberMind, a platform that pulls together marketing and sales data and provides multi-touch attribution, account/buyer-journey analytics, marketing mix modeling (MMM), account scoring, and revenue intelligence.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. CaliberMind will remain a dedicated product line with its existing team and platform. Native integrations are expected to begin appearing over the next few months, with broader interoperability coming next year.

Integrate sits at the top of the B2B demand gen process. It ingests leads coming from tactics like content syndication, events, paid media, social, webinars, forms, and other sources, then validates, enriches, deduplicates, and applies consent/data-quality rules before sending those records into the CRM, marketing automation platform (MAP), or other tools in the martech stack.

By combining the capabilities of these two companies, Integrate hopes to close the loop among marketing activity, pipeline, and revenue. That loop looks something like this:

    1. Acquire demand.
    2. Validate.
    3. Enrich.
    4. Route
    5. Observe the buyer journey.
    6. Attribute pipeline/revenue.
    7. Identify what’s working.
    8. Change targeting/spend.
    9. Acquire better demand.

Sounds good, right? The problem is, the Integrate-CaliberMind deal isn’t the first — or even the 100th — attempt to close this loop, if we’re being honest.

Attempts to solve this B2B marketing mystery stretch back so far that they practically have an archaeological record of their own.

    That record includes:

Is there even a B2B marketing loop that needs closing?

The truth is, you could have cobbled together all of the tools to close the B2B marketing-revenue loop on Monday, two days before Integrate and CaliberMind joined forces. Add tools like CaliberMind, DemandBase, and 6sense to your martech stack with Salesforce and/or a MAP, and you should be able to determine next best steps and measure results.

At this point, I’m confident no amount of welding and melding of technology will close this loop because (and I’m not the first to suggest this) the loop is not the problem. Once you close the loop, you have what looks like a deterministic B2B buying cycle, but it’s really an illusion.

The truth of B2B buying is ugly and messy. A group of people is involved, and they each do research their own way. Some will register for a webinar or download a whitepaper, which is the game Integrate played for years. Some see an ad on LinkedIn; others see a mention in ChatGPT.

How do you attribute all of that? (Not to mention the activity you can’t see.) How much weight do you give each tactic to add up to 100%?

The problem isn’t the loop. It’s every step along the way in the loop. This has been the real problem for years, but now we have AI to exacerbate it.

Imagine you take all of the messy data I just mentioned and feed it to AI. The AI determined that a webinar was responsible for 80% of a $500,000 deal. Now, AI has your team churning out webinars until the cows come home.

    What if it was wrong?
