Facebook is announcing big news next Thursday at its Menlo Park headquarters. Invitations to attend a product announcement invited media professionals to  “Come see our new home on Android.” Will it be a Facebook phone?

Speculation is that this might be the long-rumored Facebook phone. 9to5Google reported that Facebook joined forces with HTC and has been working on a major marketing campaign to support the upcoming product launch.

Marketing Land will be on site during the event with live blogging to cover the product announcement as it happens next Thursday, and updates here and on our Twitter feed @Marketingland.

Whether the product announcement involves news of Facebook’s entry into the mobile device market, a new Android app, or perhaps a “forked” version of the Android OS with Facebook’s functionality, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Facebook’s new home on Android coincides with Andy Rubin’s departure from Google Android.

This week, our own Danny Sullivan reported Rubin’s recent activity on Facebook after a notable silence on his Google+ profile.

Rubin, the founder of Android, served as Google’s Android Chief until his departure from the role earlier this month. According to a March 13 Google blog post by Larry Page, Google’s CEO, “Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google.”

Stay tuned. Our live blogging will start with the event next week, at 10am PT.
