Semrush AI Overviews study: What 2025 SEO data tells us about Google’s search shift

Google’s AI Overviews, generative summaries within search results, are rapidly reshaping SEO — available in 13.14 % of all US desktop queries by March 2025 (up from 6.49 % in January). Predominantly triggered by informational searches (88.1 %), they span industries like Science, Health, Society, Law, and Government — sectors seeing 15–22% growth in AI Overview coverage.

Although zero-click rates haven’t increased significantly, AI Overviews often replace clicks with on-page answers. Brands must now optimize not just for rankings, but also for inclusion in AI-generated summaries.
