Quora Reaches Out To The Web With Embeddable Content Widget

quora-logo-150Here’s a smart move: Quora has announced what it’s calling Embedded Quotes, which is essentially a widget that makes it easier for web site owners to include Quora content in their blog posts, articles and web pages.

There are two options for webmasters: embedding a full answer or post, or embedding just a portion of an answer/post.

The former is done by using the “Embed” link that shows up at the bottom of a post (before the comments). Quora will show a pop-up with the embed code.

Alternatively, users can highlight just a portion of a Quora post or answer and use the “Embed Quote” button that pops up. I’ll embed a portion of Quora’s announcement here to show how it looks.

As I said, it’s a smart move for Quora. There’s a ton of great content there, but despite its significant growth in the past 18-24 months, the site still gets only a fraction of traffic that the more mainstream (and mostly lower quality) Yahoo Answers. Quora has even gone out of its way to let everyone know that there’s more than just tech content in its Q&A archives.

Earlier this year, Quora also added a Follow button that can be embedded on websites.

Postscript, August 22: More potential exposure for Quora today with the news that it’s being integrated into the Social Sidebar on Bing’s search engine. See my article on Search Engine Land for more details: Bing Brings Quora Content Into Its Social Sidebar.
