tech200badgeDigital marketing companies are well represented on this year’s Tech 200, an annual list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the U.S.

This is the third year that Lead411 has put together the list, which is based on self-reported revenue growth over a three-year period; in this case, the period from 2009 to 2011, inclusive. Here are some of the online marketing companies that I spotted just inside the top 40.

    3. HasOffers
    5. RocketFuel
    11. Slingshot SEO
    14. Marketo
    15. RepEquity
    17. TubeMogul
    19. ePropertySites
    20. ActivEngage
    28. HubSpot
    36. Zillow

Further down the list are notable online marketing companies like SEOmoz, BrightWave Marketing, iGoDigital and too many others to mention. The Tech 200 ranks companies not based on overall revenue, but on sales growth. Companies must submit their data to Lead411 and there’s no cost to apply for consideration on the annual list.

In addition to the main Top 200 list, Lead411 breaks down the included companies by state, employee count and other factors. There’s also a survey of the included companies that addresses things like which marketing tactics have the best ROI (answer: SEO and tradeshows) and which tactics take up the most of their marketing budgets (answer: tradeshows and online ads).
