Tomorrow, Google will shut down Orkut, its first attempt at a social network. Launched in January 2004 — a month before Facebook — and named after its creator, Google engineer Orkut Büyükkökten, Orkut was very popular in India and Brazil; especially, Brazil where it was the dominant social network until Facebook finally surpassed it in January 2012.

Google, of course, switched its attention to Google+ in 2011, leaving Orkut to largely fend for itself, and in June decided to pull the plug on September 30. (Orkut users will be able to download their data and content until September 2016.)
