Over the past few years, using image posts has paid off for brands within the News Feed. The large image post and the link in the text would boost engagement more so than a simple link share in many cases. However, the tables may have turned back to link shares.
Earlier this year, Facebook boosted the image size of links 3x larger; this month, they’ve super-sized it. Facebook images on link shares are currently showing up in the desktop news feed up to 526 x 274 – up from the 154 x 154 January 2013 image size. Another nice change with this update is that Facebook has provided a definitive best practice for image sizes:
- Facebook recommends using an image size of 1200px by 627px
- At a minimum the open graph image tag should be 560px by 292px
While this should be a big boon for link shares, it is important for brands to remember that they should test and find out what post types work best for their content.
