ipad-eyetrackingTwo reports over the past two days from ad network Chitika shed light on adoption of the much anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen phone, as well as the current state of tablets in North America. The new iOS and Android competitor is generating 5.3 percent of all BlackBerry traffic, which reflects a “doubling in usage share since the Z10’s US release 20 days prior.”

That’s impressive until those figures are put into context. Chitika also told me that “BlackBerry-based Web traffic as a whole constitutes about 1 percent of all mobile Web traffic on our network.” So, in fact, the Z10 is growing, but it’s a modest slice of an insignificant pie.

The ad network also released data on tablet-related traffic it sees on its network. Chitika said that iPad users were responsible for roughly 82 percent of US and Canadian tablet traffic in March. Surprisingly, that was a 1.4 percent gain since February. Amid the onslaught of lower-priced Android tablets, the iPad had been starting to lose share.

Among the Android tablets, Kindle Fire was responsible for 7.1 percent of tablet-based Web traffic, and Samsung Galaxy tab devices generated 4.3 percent in March. Below is the market share distribution of the remaining Android tablets, including the Nexus 7 (which had just under 2 percent) and leads the remaining group:

Microsoft Surface tablets are on the list, but come in at well below 1 percent. These data appear to confirm what other reports have said about the lack of Surface sales in the US market.
