Just in time for July 4, New Orleans-based agency Peter Mayer is out with an admirable labor of love that celebrates America’s independence and, at the same time, brings some 21st century technology to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The agency’s founder, Peter Mayer, a first generation immigrant who “cherishes America’s freedom and opportunities,” inspired the agency to develop a piece of work that asks American if they, too, still believe in the country’s core values.

The work allows people to digitally “sign” the Declaration of Independence. To do so, people simply need to tweet #SignIt2014 to @peteramayer. Once they’ve done so, they will receive and automated reply with an image of their signature next to that of John  Hancock.

People can also visit SignIt2014.com to add their names as well. The site will collect all the names and assign each one its own specific URL, which can then be shared across social networks. And for each signature added, Peter Mayer will make a donation to the Foundation for the National Archives which aims to help preserve America’s historical documents.

Yes, this is an agency flexing its creative muscles — but it’s an admirable and worthwhile effort which just might remind people that July 4th is about much more than hot dogs, hamburgers and fireworks.
