google-io-2012Day two of Google’s developer conference, I/O 2012, is underway and we’re all gathered in the big hall for a second keynote. After yesterday’s keynote focused on Android software/hardware, Google+ and Google Glass(es), we’re expecting today to be all about Chrome, cloud-related news and Google TV.

If the Internet/WiFi connection cooperates, we’ll be liveblogging the keynote below. It’s scheduled to begin at 10:00 am PT, so stay tuned for the latest from Google I/O 2012….

We’re in the room now and it’s 10:00 am, but I suspect we won’t get started for a while as the attendees are still coming in. Google has tweeted that today’s keynote is about Chrome and Apps.

It’s now 10:05 and we’re underway!

Vic Gundotra is back on stage to welcome everyone. He’s wearing the Google Glass(es) and talking about how many attendees used the new Google+ Event features during last night’s party. He says Sergey will be back on stage later with more surprises.

Sundar Pichai, SVP of Chrome and Apps takes the stage.

He’s talking about growth of the web, and more specifically, the growth of mobile internet access. The Chrome browser had 70 million daily active users in 2010, 160 million in 2011 and now has 310 million daily active users.

Brian Rakowski, Chrome VP now speaking.

He’s doing a Chrome demo on a Macbook, but it’s not clear if he’s showing new features. I suspect not, seems like fairly basic stuff at this point.

Showing how Chrome tabs are accessible across different devices (for signed in Google users), and syncing of tabs, text, etc.

He’s announcing that Chrome will be available later today for the iPhone — look for it in the App Store.

Also announcing an iPad version of Chrome. Has same syncing features as on other platforms.

Sundar Pichai returns.

Talking about the adoption of Google Apps. Governments in 45 states, 66 of the top 100 universities and more than five million businesses are using Google Apps.

Now showing several funny videos promoting Google Apps. I’m almost LOLing. Good stuff, seriously.

Now Clay Bavor, Google Apps, takes the stage.

Google Drive now available on iOS and Chrome OS. Showing demo of how the file search works, attendees are quite pleased. Can save documents for offline access.

Will be available later today on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch.

On Chrome OS, Google Drive basically becomes the file system. Allows real-time collaboration in the cloud via Google Docs.

Also announcing offline editing of Google Docs. Shows a demo. Attendees very happy about this.

Sundar Pichai returns to the stage.

Starts talking about Chromebooks, touting the features. They call it the “always new computer.”

Chromebooks being made available in hundreds of Best Buy stores across the US, and Dixons stores in UK. You can see the Best Buy locations on Google’s website.

Urs Holzle, SVP of Infrastructure, now takes the stage.

Google has built one of the world’s largest set of datacenters, and larget networks to connect them.

Google App Engine is supporting more than a million active applications.

Announces Google Compute Engine — infrastructure as a service. Attendee right behind me just whooped and said, “That’s what I was looking for.” This is Google’s competitor for things like Amazon Web Services and others.

Attendees VERY happy about the demos of this technology.

Sundar Pichai back on stage now.

Web platform is evolving at a faster pace than ever. It’s being used across more devices. There are more use cases than ever.

Talking about Chrome Apps. Two folks from Cirque do Soleil coming on stage now. Showing how they’re moving the CdS experience to the web via an upcoming app; demoing it on a Chromebook.

Says all attendees will get a free Chromebox.

Sergey Brin now appears on the video screen. He’s up on top of the Moscone building wearing his Google Glass device.

They’re going to do another demo from the sky.

There’s been a long delay and Brin has done an admirable job of filling dead airtime while waiting for the skydive to happen.

And they did it again — all skydivers landed safely on top of Moscone West. Also doing another biker demo. It was basically a repeat of yesterday’s demo, and to be frank … not sure why it was even needed.

But that’s the end. Thanks for reading along.
